Dimplex ML2TSTie7: a practical top-up heater, not a heat pump
Where a timed 2 kW convector can make sense, and why controls matter more than magical efficiency claims.
Checked 7 October 2026. Specification-led buying guide. Not a hands-on review.
Not every cold-room problem needs a whole-house project. A portable convector can be a practical top-up option for an intermittently used space, provided the product is suitable and used exactly as instructed. It should still be compared honestly with fitted heating rather than advertised as a way to create free heat.
What this model offers
Dimplex identifies the ML2TSTie7 as a 2 kW convector with electronic time and temperature control, portable feet and wall-mounting capability. The manufacturer's range page describes a seven-day timer. This is direct electric heating, not a refrigerant heat pump. Dimplex range information.
Put the running cost in context
At a steady 2 kW input for one hour, consumption is 2 kWh. Multiply that by your actual tariff. A thermostat may cycle the heater, so elapsed time is not always full-power time; equally, a cold or draughty room can keep it working for longer. This is a calculation method, not a quoted current tariff or a guaranteed daily cost.
Make the timer useful
Consider when the room is occupied, what temperature is comfortable and whether the existing heating already covers it. A sensible schedule is more useful than running a second heater all day by habit. Review the routine after a few days rather than assume the factory settings match your life.
Placement comes first
Follow the supplied instructions for clearances, sockets and mounting. Never cover the heater or use it to dry clothes. Do not improvise use in a damp location or on an unsuitable extension arrangement. Keep the manual available for anyone who will use it. Read the model-family instructions.
For regular heating through a long season, compare a properly designed fitted option as well. For occasional top-up warmth, simple controls and suitable placement may be the priorities. The finder separates those routes rather than treating every electric heater as interchangeable.
