tado X: check the heating system before expanding your smart home
The X family is not a drop-in extension of V3+. Start with the boiler, controls and product generation.
Checked 7 October 2026. Specification-led buying guide. Not a hands-on review.
A smart thermostat purchase can go wrong long before anyone opens the box: the thermostat looks right, the app looks familiar, but the existing heating system and device family have not been checked. Start with compatibility, then decide how much room-by-room control you need.
X and V3+ are different families
tado's support guidance says X is not compatible with V3+ and earlier product lines. It also distinguishes relay and OpenTherm compatibility from other modulating boiler connections. Owning an older tado device does not prove that an X replacement will control the same system in the same way. Read tado's compatibility explanation.
Make a small inventory
Before ordering, note the boiler or heat-pump model, existing programmer, room thermostat, hot-water arrangement and any zone controls. Photographs of labels are useful; opening electrical equipment is not a necessary homeowner research step. Send the information to the installer or compatibility support rather than guess from the age of the boiler.
A radiator head is not the whole control system
ClimateCart lists an X wireless starter kit and an X radiator thermostat. Decide what each component is supposed to do and have the full arrangement checked. Room controls need to work with the way the system calls for heat, not simply appear together in an app.
Do not promise a percentage saving
The useful question is which wasteful pattern the control change will address: heating empty rooms, an awkward schedule, or controls nobody understands. Better scheduling may help, but savings depend on the starting point, settings and household routine. We do not attach a guaranteed bill reduction to this kit.
For a heat pump, ask the designer about the manufacturer's control strategy before adding third-party thermostats. A generic boiler-control shopping list is not automatically a good heat-pump control plan. Confirm the exact product code and compatibility before purchase; installation and wiring must follow the relevant professional guidance.
