Plug-in solar is here: the checks that matter before you buy
A smaller route into solar deserves the same clear questions about permissions, compliance and what it can actually power.
Plug-in solar is now an option in Great Britain, according to Energy Saving Trust's guidance updated on 1 October 2026. Its guide covers England, Scotland and Wales; it says Northern Ireland depends on regulatory changes. This is not a blanket approval for every imported device or every property. Read the current guidance.
What should buyers check?
Energy Saving Trust recommends checking property permissions, electrical suitability, compliant equipment and secure installation, and says devices must be registered before use. Read its instructions for your situation rather than relying on a seller's “plug and play” headline. Use the pre-purchase checklist.
Three questions for the supplier
- Which exact model and compliance documentation are included?
- What mounting, permissions and connection checks does my location require?
- What is included in the price, and who helps if the proposed location is unsuitable?
Do not merge three different purchases
A grid-connected plug-in solar device, a professionally designed roof installation and an off-grid power station are different propositions. Ask the seller to describe the intended use in plain language. If your aim is to support air conditioning or heating, provide the appliance's electrical demand and when you use it; a panel's headline rating is not a promise of continuous appliance operation.
For batteries, ask specifically about compatibility, charging arrangements and what “backup” means. Energy Saving Trust's current plug-in guide says integrated battery systems are not covered by the present rules and that plug-in solar shuts down during a power cut. Do not assume a battery add-on changes that.
